Worker Self-Directed Enterprises (WSDE)
The WSDE concept is best summed up as:
• Based on commitment to solidarity.
• Uses democratic methods (one member, one vote).
• Encourages the participation in and integration of management, profits and ownership.
• Harmonises projects aimed at social, business and personal development.
WSDE is the worker cooperative element of cooperatives. There are many different types of cooperatives. Worker cooperatives are different from other cooperative models. The above-mentioned attributes are mandatory for worker cooperatives, and the modern name WSDE is to differentiate it from the other cooperatives. I champion the WSDE model, which I believe is the future way of doing business; it will be common by the middle of the century or perhaps before. The pace of change will be partly dependent on technological advancement. It is logical to have WSDE as a part of this biography, and the Mondragon cooperative movement is the best example of a WSDE model.
